About This Cause
My Gut Feeling - Stomach Cancer Foundation of Canada the first and only non-profit organization in Canada dedicated to supporting stomach cancer patients, survivors and caregivers through education, awareness and advocacy. It was founded in 2016 by two survivors so that others would not have to endure this journey alone. The Foundation is volunteer-led and run, with funds going directly to the programmes we run. Our monthly support groups have been running for six years and provide a safe and confidential environment for people to share their experiences and ask questions. We also provide direct peer-to-peer support through personal meetings, phone calls, texts. We often support our members from time of diagnosis, through treatment, and end of life. Our approach is holistic, and we provide information and guidance on day-to-day life of stomach cancer. We hold annual education conferences in November bringing the health care community and patient community together to bridge the gap and educate each other. International speakers present on the latest research and treatments and patients speak about their personal journeys. We raise awareness year-round and specifically on November 30th - Stomach Cancer Awareness Day. This initiative was started in 2017. Landmarks across Canada, and now into the U.S. and Europe light up in periwinkle blue to help raise awareness for this cause which has little funding for research and yet is one of the deadliest cancers worldwide. People take pictures and post to their social media sites and ours. Our advocacy work also focuses on Canada but spans internationally. We our patient advocate members on a number of national and international research grants. We provide the patient voice which helps to inform researchers on what is most important and has the most impact for those dealing with stomach cancer. We also raise awareness, help to educate and provide advocacy by presenting at conferences and to other organizations both in Canada and internationally. We were the first patient organization to ever have a workshop at the International Gastric Cancer Congress (IGCC) in Prague, Czech Republic in 2019, and were instrumental in creating and participating in the Patient Advocate Seminar with other stomach cancer organizations, which was part of IGCC's 2022 event in Houston, Texas, U.S.A.
