Mission Statement

Harnessing the power of community to raise awareness and funds for paediatric brain tumour research to foster hope and improve outcomes for affected children and their families.

About This Cause

In late 2000, Meagan Bebenek was diagnosed with an inoperable and malignant brain tumour, and died six months later, only two weeks following her fifth birthday. Brain tumours are the leading cause of cancer related death in children and young people up to age 20. When leaving Meagan at the hospital, her mother, Denise, envisaged a real yet symbolic “hug” of the hospital, sending a message to all within that they are not alone. This vision became an annual Walk and Hug event, well known across Canada, drawing participants from across Ontario, and beyond, and attracting significant media attention. Now as Meagan’s HUG enters the 20th anniversary year, while our name and image have evolved, our goals remain the same: to increase public awareness of paediatric brain tumours; to raise funds to support research; and to share a message of hope with young patients and those who love them. Our vision is a world where no children and their families suffer from brain tumours. Our efforts will continue to support the “bench to bedside” philosophy that guides the remarkable work of the Brain Tumour Research Centre, where discoveries translate into tangible benefits for young brain tumour patients throughout the world. The need for ground-breaking and life-changing brain tumour research is as important as ever.
