Mission Statement

The Banff Sport Medicine Foundation is a research and education charity with a Mission to prevent, treat, rehabilitate, and research musculoskeletal (bone and joint) and sport injuries among people of all ages and abilities.

About This Cause

BSMF carries out research and education initiatives that support its Mission. The research pillar of BSMF is integral to providing evidence-based, quality care to patients suffering from bone and joint injury. BSMF’s close relationship with the Banff Sport Medicine Clinic (BSM) means that research results are rapidly implemented into the clinical care pathway. This provides patients with the latest advances in care that can improve health outcomes. The Foundation’s in-house research team is uniquely positioned to solve some of the many unanswered questions in the field of orthopaedic sport medicine, specifically surrounding acute knee and shoulder injury. For example, BSMF’s research group supports a highly developed research program that includes a database with over 2500 ACL and 1000 patellar (kneecap) instability surgery cases. This wealth of information is one of the largest worldwide. BSMF also partners with local and regional physiotherapists to develop post-operative follow-up clinics and participates in a wide variety of research projects including multi-centre and randomized clinical trials that assess surgical techniques, pain management, rehabilitation, and clinical outcomes. BSMF's education pillar emphasizes not only patient and community education but also training healthcare professionals. BSMF teaches hands-on physical exam skills as well as awareness of secondary injury to improve the assessment skills and knowledge of community health care providers. For BSM clinic patients, BSMF provides educational resources on a variety of topics to improve patient outcomes. For example, the benefits of exercise and activity while awaiting surgery, non-surgical treatment including therapy, bracing, and lifestyle modification, and ways to reduce the risk of another injury. BSMF is also involved in teaching high-school students, medical students, orthopaedic residents, sport medicine fellows as well as surgeons at a national and international level in the field of bone and joint health. BSMF is also invested in giving-back to the community by providing free educational resources that improve well-being and injury recovery outcomes. These resources include expert-led workshops, webinars, and events, and multimedia digital resources. The goal of providing such resources is to empower individuals to manage their health more effectively, ensuring that they can return to their desired activities with confidence.
