Mission Statement
Serbs for Serbs Canada (SFS Canada) recognizes that many Serbian families in the Balkans lack the basic necessities of life that we in Canada are privileged to enjoy. SFS Canada believes that we have a responsibility to help these families, particularly those with multiple children. It is our mission to help and provide, with full transparency, the basic necessities of life so that they become self-sufficient and contributing members of society. Recent wars and natural disasters (i.e. landslides, floods and earthquakes) have seen many of the region's residents fall into poverty, with many families forced to evacuate their homes and start their lives all over again.
About This Cause
SFS Canada chapter was formed in 2015 and received its charitable status designation in January 2016. The charity is run by 8 enthusiastic Board members on a volunteer basis. No member is being paid for their work. To date, over $1,300,000.00 in donations has been raised. SFS Canada undertakes projects to provide material support to those in need, with particular emphasis on families with children. Projects can include building houses, renovating homes and installing indoor plumbing and electricity, purchasing appliances and furniture, and providing families with livestock and agricultural machinery to help them become self-sufficient. GLOBAL ORGANIZATION Serbs for Serbs Canada (SFS Canada) supports the work of the humanitarian organization Serbs for Serbs (Srbi za Srbe), based in Belgrade, Serbia. Other SFS groups also exist in the U.S., Switzerland, Germany, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Austria, Norway, Sweden and Australia. Collectively, money is raised to eradicate poverty among Serbian families in the Balkans. MAIN EVENTS SFS Canada organizes four major annual fundraising campaigns: "In Time for Božić" (Christmas), Palačinka Party (Crêpe Party), Folklore iz Bloka, and two sports events, Trojka iz Bloka and Odbojka iz Bloka which bring out the basketball and volleyball enthusiasts. VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES SFS Canada relies on its many volunteers to ensure the success of its fundraising initiatives. Volunteers come back year after year because they support the charity’s cause and enjoy being part of the fun and positive atmosphere at each event. SFS Canada appreciates its many supporters who volunteer to hold their own fundraisers. Birthdays, slava and wedding celebrations, mini sports tournaments, garage sales, housewarming parties and bake sales are excellent opportunities to raise money for the charity. MONTHLY DONORS AND CORPORATE MATCHING SFS Canada also relies on donors outside our formal campaigns. Many of these individuals are monthly donors and their steady support is counted on. Some donors are able to double the impact of their donation by taking advantage of their company’s “corporate matching” programmes. All donors are encouraged to explore this option at their place of employment. Serbs for Serbs’ motto is Children are our future!
