About This Cause
The Family Centre provides physical and emotional wellbeing to families by reducing the financial burden of activities and education in our community as well as by helping parents to network with each other and other organizations to build support systems. It is stressed in our programs that they are always offered in a safe, non-threatening and non-judgmental environment. The Family Centre is family driven and addresses the needs of local parents and children by providing access to a variety of programs that are tailored to the families’ needs. The Family Centre hosts "Coffee Groups" where parents and their children can socialize and talk about their challenges, sign up for upcoming classes, suggest future programs and listen to guest speakers on topics that revolve around health and wellness. Many of our programs are created due to a need expressed by parents during these social gatherings. The Family Centre provides a KIDS IN THE KITCHEN program for children in grades 5 and 6 to learn about nutrition, safe food handling, cooking and to bring meals home to their families. This is offered in 2 sessions during the school year. Each session runs for 5 weeks and the students participate once per week. A qualified, experienced instructor teaches children in grades 5 and 6 how to safely prepare nutritious foods from scratch. This program is run out of our local public school (BCS 2000) home economics room. There is a small enrollment fee but we offer to sponsor children whose parents can't afford the registration fee. The Family Centre assists with literacy development through the MOTHER GOOSE reading program and also the SUMMER PRESCHOOL PROGRAM. The Mother Goose reading program occurs once per week throughout most of the year. Children aged 0-5 listen to stories and participate in activities that follow the theme of the story. Our Summer Preschool Program runs in July and August for preschool aged children. We hire instructors to lead activities that revolve around literacy, physical activity, health/wellness, music and art. MOMS IN MOTION consists of yoga/fitness classes for parents. As in the past, we will be hiring certified instructors and will provide free childcare during the classes. Our programs are all either low cost or no cost to allow low income parents to attend. Childcare is provided whenever possible during our parent support programs so that parents do not experience any financial hardship for participating in programs at the Family Centre. The CLOTHING EXCHANGE is a program that allows people in the community to bring in gently used clothing, bedding, towels, toys and children's books and can exchange them for other items. This is very helpful to parents with growing children. We have a $0.25 fee for any item that is taken without exchange but offer clothing and toys for free to those in need.
