About This Cause
Some Assembly Arts Society is a registered Canadian Charitable Non-Profit Theatre Company that builds community and improves the lives of youth in Vancouver, Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, and Canada. Some Assembly uses accessible theatre arts opportunities to address issues facing youth, promote wellness and positive social change. Each year since 2002, Some Assembly's 10-month inclusive theatre projects bring together diverse at-risk youth to work with diverse professional theatre artists on the creation of high-quality theatre productions for young audiences. These free performances with community dialogues, promote awareness, dialogue, and harm reduction associated with issues that youth are experiencing. Using the power of theatre for positive transformation, youth as contributors of the theatre productions is key as they provide relevance that resonate with young audiences. At past plays, youth audience say they feel part of the larger community because they connect to their peers on stage who validate their concerns, ideas, and experiences. Vancouver Coastal Health clinicians are present to provide support and resources for audience members. Some Assembly's annual projects involve 100+ new and returning diverse youth and artists from throughout British Columbia, including BIPOC individuals, LGBTQ2SAI+, newcomers, those with lived experiences of poverty, homelessness, substance use and/or mental health struggles. The project is free for youth to participate. Food and honouraria is provided. Key partner Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre provides marketing, as well as the venue for workshops, rehearsals, and performances. The key artists are highly skilled with over 20 years' experience working with diverse vulnerable youth. Key partner Vancouver Coastal Health provides clinicians and resources to support the youth participants. Returning youth are guided to help mentor new participants. Primary project activities involve a range of workshops and creative processes in script development, acting, music, movement, set design, costumes, props-building, lighting, film, and facilitation. Partner Sarah McLachlan School of Music provides musical instruction and recording sessions. Some Assembly's internationally recognized theatre program and annual projects are highly beneficial to youth who experience a range of challenges and barriers including lack of self-confidence, lack of motivation, distrust, communication anxiety, social anxiety, screen addiction, etc. The projects use the many aspects of theatre production while engaging the youth in thoughtful art processes that help build life skills, confidence, communication skills, community involvement, sense of belonging, and mental health management. Many say it 'changed their life'. Some say it ‘saved their life’. Since 2002, Some Assembly has engaged over 4200 diverse youth with artists of various disciplines on the creation of 34 plays performed to over 40,000 audience members from throughout British Columbia. Some Assembly has helped other arts, education, health, and social service professionals deepen their understanding of the role art can play in raising public awareness to issues that concern young people while supporting their wellbeing. Some Assembly Arts Society is the recipient of the City of Vancouver Youth Award for outstanding contribution to the youth community; the Deryck Thomson Award for exceptional contribution to community building and well being; the Give a Damn award for its charitable work with youth; as well as numerous awards from the BC Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts.
