Mission Statement
Shifra Homes' mission is to provide a safe haven, and an empowering environment that promotes dignity and a sense of hope for young homeless pregnant women. We aim to provide support and resources, and to protect and nurture new life.
About This Cause
With the generous and gracious help of our contributors we have successfully aided, supported, and supplemented the lives of the mothers and most importantly their babies. In addition, we provide stability for these mothers during a time of great flux in their lives. This allows them to cope with the transitions more fluently, while providing them with the means necessary for success. Children are the creators of our future; as such we strive to provide the necessary means and alacrity so that these mothers and babies may have new beginnings which are endemic with hope. Each one of our residents is admitted into our Home and program with no support, only the clothes on their back, and the future of our society in their wombs. While assisting young pregnant women and their babies we address the basic human needs of providing a secure home, food, security, education, health and nutrition, transportation, counselling, parenting and life skills, and so much more. These women are usually youth from lower-income backgrounds, and come from very diverse and often dysfunctional families. A large majority of the residents at Shifra Homes have or had concerns with mental health, self-harm, and or have attempted suicide. The young women have issues with physical and emotional abuse, human trafficking, neglect, depression, anxiety, social anxiety, drugs, self-harm, low self-esteem and worth, fetal alcohol syndrome and various other disabilities. At Shifra Homes we strive to build an environment which is embracing and nurturing for our residents. Our atmosphere is one in which we strive to encourage and develop a sense of stability, support and family. We teach these young women life skills, provide them with support and counseling, empower them and encourage their growth as individuals and mothers. Our residents are required to continue schooling and their education while residing in our Home. We help them with job-searching, and assist them in learning about and nurturing the early childhood development of their infants. We operate to provide a family dynamic, where these young women can learn what it means to live in a stable, supportive environment with healthy relationships and consistent care. This is an integral component to our Residential Program because we work to break the cycle and history of hurt and neglect that these women have endured, and introduce an entirely new lifestyle to them. Secondly, we act as both a shelter and a resource centre for our current and previous residents, whereas other organizations predominantly only provide one service or the other. This dual service provision of our Home is a defining feature of why our residents are successful and never return to homelessness following discharge. Thirdly, through the implementation of our Seeds of Hope Program, we have given these previously at-risk youth that much needed additional support to ensure that they remain successful for years following discharge. Additionally, our program accepts women from a large age range: 16-27, whereas most shelters only accept either teens or adult women.
