Mission Statement
To provide women, impacted by sexual exploitation and sex trafficking, with safe refuge, restoration, and reintegration through job skills training, counselling, and opportunities to move beyond trauma and towards building a life of freedom and choices.
About This Cause
Next Step Ministries (NSM) provides trauma-informed outreach support to meet the emergency needs, including access to resources, for women exiting sexual exploitation and sex trafficking in Calgary and the surrounding communities. NSM’s second-stage safe housing offers women, who are stable from substance abuse, a place where they can feel safe and secure by having a private room. The day program, which women in the program attend four days a week, provides a healthy routine with structured lessons where they work on developing recovery and life skills. In addition to the curriculum, women in the program have regular access to mental health coaching, emotional support, and even emergency response and suicide mitigation counseling. Finally, the follow care program helps participants to regain jobs, independent housing and getting children back. This program also remains open-ended so that at any time after leaving the formal NSM program, alumni are offered long-term access and support from staff to help ease their transition and avoid relapse back into a life of exploitation, poverty, homelessness and addictions. The primary population that NSM serves is women (18+) and includes individuals experiencing domestic violence (and more specifically sexual assault, exploitation and trafficking). On average 53% of our program participants self-identify as being Indigenous. We support on average 60 women/month during this time of crisis but always have a wait list of women needing help. We have hundreds of others who have completed our program and whom our staff continue to support as long as they need assistance.
