About This Cause
About Doane Uschool: We are dedicated to providing quality music education to over 950 city students in 58 weekly classes regardless of their financial circumstances. Our History: In 2007, successful recording artist and Juno Award winner, Melanie Doane, first taught the Method to eight students at her children’s elementary school as a volunteer. Today, that teaching practice – incorporated in 2014, and now a registered charity – serves over 950 students in 58 weekly classes throughout the full school year. Melanie Doane self-financed the program for the first seven years. Due to our growth, we now seek funding support from individuals, foundations and corporations to maintain accessibility and meet demand. The Founder of our entirely made-in-Canada Method, J. Chalmers Doane, received the Order of Canada for his contributions to music education, most notably for his innovative use of the ukulele and the national implementation of his Method by Canadian schools. Our Advanced Ensembles have performed: With Sarah McLachlan and Jim Creeggan announcing our Founding Sponsor support from Sun Life; Emilie-Claire Barlow “Christmas at Koerner Hall”; astronaut Chris Hadfield via satellite link to the International Space Station; and Writer’s Trust Gala celebrating Margaret Atwood’s 75th birthday. In the Panamania cultural festival for the 2015 Pan Am Games; and 2017 Luminato Big Bang Bash. On the CIBC Trading Floor (Children’s Miracle Day); at benefit concerts for People For Education (Sloan); Earth Day, and the Bach Children’s Chorus, Regent Park School of Music (Andy Kim). Live on YTV, CBC television, TVO and Talk 1010 radio. With the Barenaked Ladies for our own “Uschool Sessions”. In the 2018 Luminato Festival as part of ”Instruments of Happiness, A Tribute to George Harrison”. Our Program: We subsidize all 950 students and more than 300 receive the program at no cost. Possessing a minimum of two-year’s training in our Method, instructors are professional music educators and musicians teaching group classes of 15-20 students for a full 30 weeks of the school year. Beyond the classroom, we offer online lessons supporting practice between classes, School Board and University program consultation and performance opportunities. Our students participate in live performances: in school concert settings, self-produced school tours, community concerts and professional recording opportunities with mentors from the music industry. Whether or not students pursue post-secondary music, we have offered them musical and life skills, helped develop discipline and group participation and confidence through the art of public presentation. We build bridges between social, ethnic and economic communities across the city and contribute to the culture of each school and neighborhood we serve.
