Mission Statement

To assist the City and community of Iqaluit by creating and supporting programs that address the health and humane treatment of companion animals, including re-homing of abandoned animals, and animal-related public safety issues.

About This Cause

The Iqaluit Humane Society raises awareness about the humane treatment of companion animals and assists the City of Iqaluit with animal abandonment and overpopulation issues. The IHS is a registered non-profit and, to date, we’ve saved over 3,500 animals. The IHS is the first animal shelter in the Territory of Nunavut, which is located in the remote Canadian Arctic on Baffin Island. We experience harsh winter conditions lasting up to 10 months of the year (we even had a snow fall in July), making it even more critical to save animals quickly that have lost their home. We operate programs that offer services to the community. The IHS hosted a free spay/neuter clinic and treated over 150 animals. The society holds vaccine clinics and educational programs in the schools. The IHS also believes in strengthening the laws in the territory and we are hard at work attempting to improve conditions for all animals.
