Mission Statement

To achieve better science, without animals

About This Cause

The Society for Humane Science is Canada's first and only registered charity working solely to achieve the replacement of animals in science through education and policy change. We have two core pillars of work: 1) Influence science culture, and 2) Policy reform. To influence science culture we run a multifaceted and successful Humane Science Education Program that serves K-12 teachers and students across Canada and helps them replace the use of animals in dissection. We also created and now teach a university undergraduate course at the University of British Columbia called New Approach Methods in Biomedicine, which trains the next generation of scientists in cutting edge non-animal, human-relevant research methods. For policy reform we have spearheaded a national working group which aims to help achieve national legislation to both govern the use of animals in science (Canada currently has no legislation) and to prioritize the replacement of animals as best scientific practice. We are also working to create policy change at the municipal and provincial level so that school students are given the the right to opt out of dissection through implementation of Student Choice Policies.
