Mission Statement

The North Saskatchewan Riverkeeper works in close partnership with Swim Drink Fish Canada to ensure swimmable, drinkable, fishable water for everyone throughout the prairie region and across Canada.

About This Cause

North Saskatchewan Riverkeeper has been working to restore and protect a swimmable, drinkable, fishable watershed since 2010. The organization's flagship initiative is its Swim Guide research project, which aggregates water quality information for beaches and swimming holes in Alberta and shares the information with the public through the Swim Guide app. Alberta is the third-most popular market for Swim Guide in Canada, now the world's most popular beach information services. Through its work to protect swimmable water, Riverkeeper has increasingly focused on blue-green algae issues. This is one of the greatest threats to public health and aquatic life in the region. In 2017, Riverkeeper launched a "Water Literacy" program. This education initiative informs and connects the community to the watershed in order to protect public health and the environment. It is a direct response to a University of Alberta study which found that 75% of people are aware of environmental issues and want to protect the environment, but do not know how. For the last two years, Riverkeeper has been leading water literacy workshops in the community, including a successful collaboration with ICE School and the Edmonton Oilers Foundation.
