Mission Statement

The mission of Two Wheel View is to provide youth development programs that use the bicycle as the tool to build resiliency in young people.

About This Cause

Kevin had been told his whole life that he was different and that his learning disability was always going to stand in his way. Struggling in high school, dealing with stress at home and lacking positive support from his peers, Kevin was withdrawn, anxious, thought very little of himself and starting to make poor choices as a result. Chronic stress, anxiety, depression, lack of self-esteem and poor self-confidence. These are just a few of the challenges that many youth in Calgary are facing as they make their transition to adulthood. Many of these critical issues result from social isolation and bullying and if the youth is low income, a newcomer or indigenous, they face additional challenges including language, cultural barriers and lack of access. Youth that are unsupported through their transition to adulthood are more likely to be vulnerable to homelessness, victimization, criminal activity and other risky activities. Two Wheel View (TWV) is investing in vulnerable youth like Kevin by providing a unique, strengths-based development program that gives youth a place to belong, an opportunity to feel successful, and a chance to learn important social emotional skills that increase their resiliency, build their confidence and develop their leadership skills - all from the seat of a bike. TWV develops both the leaders of tomorrow and more confident, comfortable, purposeful, active youth of today. What we offer: Earn-a-Bike (Bike Club) Program: This program uses the bicycles as a tool to foster leadership, teamwork and social emotional skills. Through this 10 week program, youth make positive peer and adult connections, practice teamwork skills and discuss topics such as empathy, identity and responsibility. Upon completion, they earn a bicycle of their own, along with a lock and helmet. Bike Trips: Through our bike trips, youth have the opportunity to participate in a high impact outdoor education experience. They build leadership and resiliency skills while increasing their sense of adventure, self-esteem and desire to pursue healthy lifestyles. The trips also support a connection to nature and local culture. Full Cycle: The Full Cycle Program engages southern Alberta First Nations youth in positive, community based initiatives. Full Cycle aims to reduce risk factors facing Indigenous youth, while increasing protective factors through a school-based bicycle program. In partnership with the communities, TWV delivers in-service training and support for teachers and community members, skill building bike mechanic programs and bike trip experiences that develop a sense of adventure and discovery. GAP Employability The GAP program seeks to build capacities for employment through the hands-on exploration of bike mechanics. Participants age 18-24, face barriers to employment and receive guidance in professional shop procedures, have opportunities to teach and learn from their peers, take on a community oriented project, and practice their skills on bikes used for other Two Wheel View programs. Opportunities are provided to shadow bike mechanics and network with local businesses. How does TWV accomplish all of this? Only with the visionary support of generous donors and volunteers. In 2018: -Our team brought our mission to life for more than 600 youth in 2018. -Our incredible volunteers invested more than 1300 hours to program and event support. - - - More than 1400 hours contributed by students, engaged in a wide variety of capacity building projects. - 861 bicycles were donated to use in our programs or our social enterprise bike shop. -75% of Earn-a-Bike participants indicated that they felt better about themselves as a result of their participation in our program. -82% of Bike Trip participants shared that the trip experience resulted in the development of new problem solving skills. -100% of Full Cycle participants felt connected to their Two Wheel View facilitators. Our communities continue to face challenges and so do our youth. There is more to do. More youth to connect with, more confidence to be built, more skills to teach. Two Wheel View provides youth development programs unlike any other in our community. With your support, we will be able to provide more youth the opportunity to develop independence, gain employability skills, and build self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment while connecting with their community. Together we can change the outlook for more kids like Kevin. We invite you to join us in our mission to change kids’ lives from the seat of a bike.
