Mission Statement
The Calgary Sledge Hockey Association works to enrich our community by promoting social awareness, well-being and sport through the development of sledge hockey programs in Southern Alberta. Our vision is to enhance the Sledge Hockey community by removing barriers to athletic success, developing leaders through sport and promoting a culture of acceptance, innovation and team work.
About This Cause
Sledge hockey has existed in Calgary for more than 20 years but has experienced most of its growth since the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver. After becoming an incorporated society in October 2011, the Calgary Sledge Hockey Association became a non profit society and created three separate club teams in the association that play at the Novice (players under 12 years old), Intermediate (Recreational) and Senior (Competitive) levels. Currently, Calgary’s sledge hockey clubs practice on Mondays and Wednesday evenings at 7:15 p.m. (Joan Snyder Rink - Winsport Arena located at 88 Canada Olympic Road S.W.) The team also has ice time on Saturday’s at 6:15 p.m. (Stew Hendry Arena—814 13 Avenue N.E.) Since 2004, The Calgary Sledge Hockey Association has been a program within the overall structure of Hockey Alberta. Sledge hockey is also represented through Hockey Canada at the Paralympic level where the game follows the same rules of ordinary ice hockey with just a few accessibility modifications. Currently, The Calgary Sledge Hockey Association is a volunteer-based, non-profit society governed by nine members who serve as the Board of Directors and representatives from our coaching staff.
