About This Cause

What does Green Wood Coalition do? 1. Homeless Outreach Green Wood’s outreach staff and community leaders make themselves available to those who experience difficulty navigating the barriers surrounding housing, income support, healthcare, and food supply. By adopting a relational approach, rather than a medical or social service model of care, we are able to connect with the pockets of poverty in our community that can be missed by a broad strokes methodology. 2. Weekly Community Dinner Green Wood’s members have been gathering to eat together, every week, since the fall of 2006. The community dinner is our largest gathering and has become an important connecting point for meeting new people and sharing information. Located at St John's Anglican Church (33 Pine Street North, Port Hope). This is where we build relationships between individuals who are well-off and those who face daily struggles with poverty and homelessness. Delicious meals are provided by a roster of church groups, service clubs, and our own members. After serving ourselves at a buffet table, we sit together, shoulder-to-shoulder, to enjoy the food and social interaction. 3. Creative Arts Program The Green Wood Creative Arts program, led by experienced art facilitators, is considered the most successful of our initiatives in creating positive change in the lives of individuals. There is a growing body of research that demonstrates the value of expressive and therapeutic art programs in recovery from trauma. Our two-hour creative arts sessions, located at our main space 18 Ontario Street, Port Hope, offers a regular gathering place in a safe environment to explore life experiences through making art with others. 4. Redpath Recovery Program Green Wood has adopted the Redpath recovery program and is currently offering a small group series. This ground-breaking model has proven to be successful in the areas of substance misuse, violence, rehabilitation, and employability. With long waiting lists and other obstacles, access to services that address these effects of trauma can be difficult or impossible to obtain. By offering the Redpath program we are allowing easier access to an innovative approach that develops emotional and social competency skills. 5. Improved Access to Healthcare Green Wood works with an outreach nurse practitioner, and other staff of the Community Health Centre to lower the threshold of access to medical care, resulting in improved health and reduced usage of emergency services. Our nurse practitioner attends the weekly dinner to offer easy access to a healthcare professional. 6. Wraparound Life Planning Green Wood offers the Wraparound planning process to empower individuals and families with complex needs. Wraparound seeks to create positive outcomes by providing an individualized team planning process (including informal and formal supports) that respects the participant and results in plans that are more effective and more relevant to their needs. 7. Community Garden Green Wood’s community garden, located on Peter St. in Port Hope, offers the opportunity for individuals and families to socialize while engaging in healthy physical activity, growing fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. Individual raised bed gardens are made available on a rental or rent-subsidized basis. The garden is also used for other community events. The use of the land is generously provided by the Wolters family.
