Mission Statement

HIPPY Halton's Home Visitors empower vulnerable and newcomer mothers to prepare their preschool children for success in school; because all children deserve an opportunity to learn and to thrive. HIPPY Halton creates opportunities to ensure that parents and children thrive in school, at home and beyond

About This Cause

HIPPY Halton provides a free preschool education for 2, 3, 4 and 5 year old children of vulnerable and newcomer families. The 30 week program, specifically teaches the vital pre-reading, pre-writing and pre-math skills needed for success in Kindergarten and beyond HIPPY employs and trains newcomer women as Home Visitors, in their first job in Canada, to make weekly home-visits to Mothers of vulnerable and newcomer families. Together, they role play the week's activities which are based on children's literature. Empathetic peer Home Visitors, who have participated in the program, are able to offer community support and information. The mothers then teach their children each week’s five activities. The literature-based curriculum has been extensively tested across all 12 of the HIPPY Canada sites. All materials and supplies are free to the families HIPPY serves three populations: • children who start school with confidence and the appropriate skills, ready to learn and succeed. • their mothers, who develop their English literacy skills, their relationship with their children and their own pride and self-confidence as they settle into their new community. Community capacity is built as the mothers grow and develop into advocates for their children’s education and informed, engaged members and potential leaders of their community. The need for community services is reduced. •The Home Visitors improve and develop their English literacy skills and are guided to prepare for a higher-level employment. They receive a minimum of 100 hours of training each year to prepare for higher level positions. They develop a Canadian work record and references to ease their integration into the work force
