About This Cause

Little Warriors is a national, charitable organization focused on the awareness, prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse. The Little Warriors Be Brave Ranch by Ray LaBonte and Family is located on 120 acres outside of Edmonton, Alberta. It is a specialized, intensive, trauma-informed, evidence-based treatment centre solely focused on helping children who have been sexually abused, as well as their families. Our program is for girls and boys from 8-12 years old and girls between the ages of 13 and 16. We offer a one-year combined onsite and outpatient program designed with significant input from many leading academic and clinical experts who specialize in child sexual abuse and trauma. The Be Brave Ranch treatment program is based on intensive episodes of treatment. We support healing using evidence-informed clinical interventions, including TF-CBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavioral) informed interventions, Expressive Therapies (Art, Psychodrama, etc.), Somatic Therapeutic Interventions, Indigenous Elder teachings, Animal-Assisted Therapy, EMDR, Music Therapy, Group Therapy, Family Therapy, and Individual Therapy. The treatment for the children aged 8-12 begins with a 28- day stay at the Be Brave Ranch and a 12-day stay for girls aged 13-16. During their initial intensive intervention, children are placed in a peer group or “cohort”, which helps them create strong bonds and encourages greater support. Throughout the year, children return to the Ranch for three additional intensive interventions for 12 days to continue their face-to-face therapy and reconnect with their cohort in person. In between stays, children work with the clinical team on an outpatient basis and in collaboration with resources in their community. The Be Brave Ranch team values work with other community agencies and supports to address the needs of children, youth and families across the continuum of care. It costs approximately $25,000 for a child ages 8-12 and $10,000 for a youth ages 13-16 to complete the year-long treatment program at the Be Brave Ranch. In order to remove financial barriers and make our program accessible to all children who require it, the treatment program, accommodation, meals, 24 hour supervision and recreation activities are offered at no cost to participants. We are partnered with researchers at the University of Alberta through the department of Psychiatry to oversee and measure the outcomes of the Be Brave Ranch treatment program. Our clinical oversight committee ensures that the staff and programs operate in accordance with good clinical practice and applicable regulatory requirements. Clinical data results confirm the success of the Be Brave Ranch treatment program for boys and girls aged 8-12 and girls aged 13-16. The results include highly significant reductions in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety. Additionally, the intensive and comprehensive treatment program significantly improves self-esteem, cognitive abilities and resiliency. We believe this will lead to profound long-term benefits including: Reduced mental health related issues, including depression and anxiety Increase in self esteem A greatly reduced risk of future drug and alcohol use Increased performance in school A decrease in school dropout rates A decrease in suicide rates A decrease in interactions with the criminal justice system For a complete list of our clinical data results, visit our website at littlewarriors.ca Please visit our website to determine the suitability for each child and to find out how to apply for entry into the Be Brave Ranch program. The Little Warriors Prevent it! workshop is an evidence based education workshop was developed by researchers at the University of Alberta and research shows it significantly improves attitudes, knowledge and behaviour. This workshop is unique in Canada and was developed using research-informed methods and evaluated with scientific rigour. The Prevent It! workshop offers hope in the fight to prevent child sexual abuse. This hope comes from the knowledge that adults who take it can become more supportive of children and begin using more behaviours that are believed to reduce children’s vulnerability to sexual abuse. The Prevent It! workshop educates adults to TAKE ACTION through gaining knowledge to help prevent and respond to child sexual abuse. The Prevent It! workshop educates participants to help prevent and respond to child sexual abuse by using the following steps: Study, Talk, Observe and Prepare for action. The results of an extensive study conducted on the Prevent It! workshop are published in Frontiers in Psychology and suggest that at the three month follow up after completing the workshop, there were highly significant improvements in several aspects of behaviour and knowledge, and attitudes regarding child sexual abuse. - The number of subjects actively looking for evidence of Child Sexual Abuse increased from 46% (at baseline) to 81% (at follow-up) - The number of subjects who actively took steps to protect children increased from 25% (at baseline) to 48% (at follow-up) - An overall increase in accurate knowledge about Child Sexual Abuse - Less adherence to myths about Child Sexual Abuse - Participants talked about more Child Sexual Abuse related topics with children in their lives - The amount of recommended organizational prevention strategies being used tripled (in those that were a part of an organization when they took the program) During the in person and online workshop adults will learn to take action to help prevent and respond to child sexual abuse using the following steps: Study – Participants learn about child sexual abuse and become familiar with basic information about it. Individuals will learn about healthy sexual development and what is expected in children as well as what behaviours are concerning. Talk – Participants will learn that talking with children about their sexual development and about child sexual abuse as a critical step in reducing their vulnerability to sexual abuse. Observe – Participants will learn about concerning signs to watch for in children that could indicate sexual abuse has occurred. Individuals will also learn about concerning signs to watch for in other adults. Prepare for ACTION– Participants will learn ways they can begin taking action today, to help stop child sexual abuse through supporting children they are concerned about as well as working to reduce the risk of sexual abuse to other children. The workshop is useful for parents, professionals and organizations that are: - seeking training for staff and volunteers in the prevention of child sexual abuse - needing to respond to insurance requirements - wanting to be leaders in health and safety regarding child protection - interested in learning how to protect the children in their lives - wanting to make a difference in their community The workshop includes: - an interactive workbook for each participant - video segments of experts and sexual abuse survivors’ stories - opportunity for discussion about important issues in sexual abuse prevention and the relevance of these issues for parents, staff, volunteers and organizations that serve children and youth After the training, participants will feel empowered and be informed - about child sexual abuse - about child sexual development - how to talk with children about healthy sexual development - to watch for concerning behaviours in other adults - to watch for concerning signs in children - respond to disclosures of child sexual abuse - how to report abuse - how to reduce the risk of sexual abuse as responsible adults and organizations Upon completion of the workshop, each participant will receive a certificate of attendance.
