Mission Statement
“As a network, our mission is to prevent, support, diagnose, and stand by people impacted by FASD. We achieve this through inclusive, responsive, innovative collaborative action to promote knowledge and wellness, and build community capacity.”
About This Cause
Northwest Central FASD Network is a not-for-profit organization that provides Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, FASD, supports and services to a large region in the north, west and central areas of Alberta. Our region includes large and small towns, rural and remote locales, seven First Nations reserves and Edmonton Justice Facilities and Youth Justice Organizations. We strive to provide FASD supports and services in an effective and efficient manner without compromising quality for our clients. We do this through enhanced time management skills, modern telecommunication, technological supports, and strategic utilization of our wonderful and collaborative partnerships across this vast region. NWCFASD Network provides FASD awareness, education, training and prevention programs to individuals, families, agencies, professionals and communities. We assess and diagnose for FASD from the age of six onward with our mobile pediatric and adult clinics. We support individuals suspected or diagnosed with FASD through a client centered, strength based mentorship model. We offer education, respite and counseling support for families and caregivers of these individuals. All staff have Gender Base Analysis Plus, GBA+, certification, and have training in serving the 2SLGBTQ+ population. Our Parent and Child Assistance Program, PCAP, and Indigenous PCAP program is a three year mentoring relationship with women of child bearing years at heightened risk of pregnancy, potentially with alcohol and or drug affected births. Our In Reach programs provides staff training, inmate sharing circles and assessment and diagnostic clinics in approximately nine corrections facilities in Edmonton. Although this program does run in some co-gender facilities the majority of our programming is dedicated to our First Nations, Metis and Inuit, FNMI, women as they have been identified as a vulnerable population in need of additional supports. All staff receive cultural training on an annual basis most from FMNI populations within our region. We have been honored by these communities to attend their sweats, feasts, Sundances, powwows, and are well versed in the traditional practices of prayer, smudge, tobacco offering and appropriate honorariums. We will not work in an Indigenous community without attending to the proper protocols as laid out by that community and purposefully take the necessary time required to build relationship and trust with Chief, Council and the community at large. We have created a First Nation Liaison position for our board and ensure our members are reflective of the populations we serve. We are a Centre for Knowledge and actively participate in research partnerships with universities and provincial and national organizations. We sit on four advisory councils and are members of a Community of Practice. We evaluate our programs annually toward the development of best practices in the field of FASD. We have presented three of our unique Network's programs nationally and two internationally. Our employees are life long learners, and on top of mandated courses, skills development and various certifications, five of our eight staff are currently seeking higher levels of education in their respected fields including an MBA, two BSW's, and two Mental Health and Addictions Diplomas.
