Mission Statement

Dryden’s own Second Chance Pet Network provides a safe haven for surrendered and abandoned animals, pending their adoption into loving, forever homes. To help control the pet population in Dryden and surrounding area through spaying and neutering and to have all pets adopted into loving, forever homes. A shelter is not a place for animals to be just “dropped off”. We are here to help you rehome your pet if you find you do not wish to keep him/her. For those of you that find yourself just needing some temporary help. We have programs in place that may help. Some restrictions are in place, of course. We are a not for profit organization who relies on the generous donations from the citizens of Dryden and surrounding area. Donations are graciously accepted with charitable receipts provided for all cash donations of $20 and over.

About This Cause

We are a volunteer animal shelter involved in rescue. We are the only shelter between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, ON (to our knowledge!) We take in whatever animals we can help in Northwestern Ontario and also work with a rescue in Northern Manitoba, whether it is actually taking in some of their animals or just being a meeting spot in a transfer. We not only do dogs and cats, we have had birds, reptiles, mice, wild turkeys, baby turkeys, etc. They are all lives! We have a second hand store called Treasures on the main street of Dryden, sell tickets and do numerous different fundraisers to support our programs and rely heavily on donations, as do all animals rescues. We have a low cost spay/neuter program to assist low income people to have their animals altered, hoping to reduce some of the kittens and puppies. We also have a feral cat colony. An older couple had been caring for a large number of cats that had steadily been dropped off on their property, but were unable to have them all altered, so of course, the population increased. When neighbours started to threaten the lives of the cats, we stepped in. A feral cat enclosure was built on our property, and the work began. The cats were caught, using live traps, taken to the vet, vaccinated and spayed or neutered. They were then released into their new homes....all 173 of them!! They are fed and watered daily, litter pans cleaned and are free to live out there lives not being bothered by people. We have done the same at both landfills in this area, another 34 cats. Of course, young kittens are tamed and adopted out to loving homes. The picture posted was a group of 8 puppies we took in from Northern Manitoba. After a check up and vaccines at the vets office, they all had a bath, were dewormed and microchipped. Busy day for them! Another busy day was May 31, 2016, when we were called to an apartment that housed 27 cats, from 10 days old to 8 years. The owner had passed away and there was no one to take care of the animals. Sorry, no pictures as we were very busy, as you can imagine!! Update as pf June/23.....last year we started really pushing the Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return program in the City of Dryden. We were able to TNVR 288 cats!!! We also had a few in there that were returned to their owners. This is made a big difference in the number of kittens we have found in the City of Dryden this year. Unfortunately, towns surrounding us are not implementing this program so we are getting a lot of kittens from these towns. We currently have 37 under 6 weeks old so are kept quite busy working with them!
