About This Cause

The John Howard Society of Belleville was established in 2004. A grassroots organization, it has expanded over the years from one staff member to 24 employees. The Society offers a range of services, with a specialization in programs for youth, homeless and marginalized people. The John Howard Society of Belleville remained open during the pandemic providing a lifeline for youth, families and adults. Donations are needed to continue the essential work of “The Youth Wellness Hub” (“the Hub”), our major initiative providing a one-stop-shopping model of care. Children, youth and young adults aged 10-24 can access mental health, substance use, primary care, employment, housing, education, and other services and supports in a youth friendly space. Youth participate in an intake interview to identify their needs and develop a coordinated wrap-around plan for moving forward. As many of our youth have experienced significant trauma, services are provided to them using trauma-informed approaches. The Society works in partnership with other clinical service providers who can access the young person’s intake history and avoid repetition of their circumstances. The Youth Wellness Hub houses the following programs: Quantum – assists youth with individual tutoring, advocacy in the education system, mentoring, connections to healthy social and recreational opportunities and referrals to complete community service hours. Quantum also provides an onsite classroom for youth who need alternatives to the traditional classroom. During periods of lockdown, Quantum provided space for students struggling with online learning. Belleville Youth Centre – offers social and recreational programs using the Society’s full-sized gymnasium, art room, music space, kitchen, lounge and other resources. Youth from Trenton are provided transportation to the centre on Tuesdays. Employment Pathways - facilitates access to training, education and work experience with the goal of helping youth age 16-24 successfully secure and maintain employment. The Society partners with barber shops, a local video production company, auto and small engine repair shops that help to prepare youth for successful future employment. The Society has also created a café in the Quinte courthouse which aims to provide work experience, job readiness training and life skills. A hot dog cart and a milkshake stand are coming in the spring. The Youth Peer Mentor program – hires young people with lived experience to assist youth through the Employment Pathways project.
