About This Cause
Scaramella Concerts presents a chamber music concert series in Toronto and its environs. Performed at the highest caliber by accomplished and artful chamber musicians from within Canada and abroad, Scaramella’s concerts are designed with an eye to educating and increasing the public’s understanding and appreciation of period instrument performance, as well as setting an example of how traditional classical music may be incorporated more fully into Toronto’s integrated arts scene. Offering innovative programs that reach across different artistic genres, Scaramella aims to attract a large and diverse audience, and to express classical music in a manner that a broad public will find appealing, accessible and relevant. Emphasizing the unique and subtle timbres inherent to period instrument performance, as well as the excitement and anticipation of exploring and performing new and unknown music, Scaramella’s fresh approach to programming features traditional early music (primarily of the 16-18th centuries) paired with other types of classical and folk music, and other art forms. Scaramella’s concerts seek to incorporate some unexpected elements, through variety in repertoire, by juxtaposing music with art, literature, dance or other kinds of media, or simply the manner in which the presentation is staged. In addition to continuing the concert series, Scaramella’s plans include development of an educational outreach program, pursuing additional performance opportunities (especially ones that might take classical music into spaces less-traditionally associated with that genre), the production of CD recordings and commissioning of new musical compositions for period instruments, as well as dramatic works (theatrical, literary and/or dance oriented) and other art media projects as collaborations for future presentation.
