Mission Statement
We’re in search of young Canadians with integrity, compassion, and courage – the future community helpers, movement makers, and civic-minded risk-takers. The Loran Scholars Foundation (www.loranscholar.ca) works to identify and support talented students who show sparks of leadership potential and strong commitment to service. Together with 600+ volunteers, 600+ donors, and Canadian university partners, we are investing in our collective future.
About This Cause
The Loran Award is the country’s largest and most comprehensive four-year undergraduate merit-based award. The award is unique in that it’s not a reward for past accomplishments, but an investment in a potential future path of high impact. Loran, short for Long-Range Aid to Navigation, is a system that uses three points (for us, our values of character, service and leadership) to determine one’s course for a long journey. We chose this name to emphasize the lifelong impact and values of being a Loran Scholar. We annually invest in the potential of young people across the country in the following ways: - Loran Provincial/Territorial Award: up to 60 semi-finalists receive a one-time amount of $2,000 to be used at any public Canadian University. - Loran Finalist Award: up to 58 finalists receive a one-time amount of $5,000 to be used at any public Canadian University. - Loran Award: up to 36 students will earn Loran Awards, each valued at $100,000 over four years and renewed annually. We do not provide a scholarship in the traditional sense of simple funds to support students through school. Our mission is to support these students in realizing their potential and promote their growth as leaders who are committed to giving back by providing them with a launchpad. Loran Scholars are encouraged to use all of these opportunities to broaden and enrich their academic studies and develop their leadership capabilities. Valued at up to $100,000, the Loran Award includes: - Study at any of our 25 partner universities with an annual $10,000 living stipend and up to $10,000 in tuition waiver, per year - Up to $14,000 in funding for three summer work experiences in enterprise, public policy, and community development in Canada and abroad - A comprehensive four-year enrichment program including: - A one-one-one mentorship program with a business or community leader - An orientation expedition with Outward Bound - Annual retreats and scholar gatherings that facilitate peer-to-peer learning and skills building - The opportunity to join an extensive life-long community of individuals working toward a better country and world In addition to scholar stewardship, we have an active and engaged alumni community. Through virtual and local programming, the 12 alumni hubs across North America and the globe (including one specifically designated as a global hub) keep alumni connected to the values that were first identified in them as Loran Scholars. Despite their young average age (only 32), our 583 alumni have taken on leadership responsibilities beyond their years in business, public policy, academia, law, medicine, the arts and many other disciplines.
