Mission Statement

Unity is a national charitable organization that uses Hip Hop art forms to build resilience among underserved youth.

About This Cause

Unity's work begins with introducing youth to interconnected opportunities through “INSPIRE” outreach initiatives where Hip Hop community champions promote the art forms as mediums for building resilience through authentic expression, overcoming obstacles, and accessing resources. Youth are then invited into “ENGAGE” initiatives where they build resilience by acquiring protective factors, social capital, and transferable skills in weekly “Hip Hop meets mental health” programs led by peers and caring adults. Finally, youth are invited to access advanced “EMPOWER” opportunities which feature incubator, networking and mentorship programs that develop resilience through developing employability skills, providing economic opportunities, and fostering networks between youth and prospective employers. From Unity's first touch-point (INSPIRE) to our exit strategy (EMPOWER), youth walk away more resilient and with improved awareness, readiness and access to community and career advancement opportunities. All programs are free, delivered in partnership with organizations mandated to serve diverse youth facing barriers, and offer wrap-around support such as transit & technology subsidies, healthy snacks, tailored mentorship, and more to remove barriers to opportunities that lead to career advancement. Every initiative begins with equity-led consultations that centers our beneficiaries in planning, design, and delivery, and concludes with community-led evaluations and interviews to keep us accountable to our intended impact. In a world where young people face numerous challenges such as low self-esteem, self-confidence, isolation, stress, and anxiety, mental health supports, and resilience are more crucial than ever. Our programs equip youth with the tools they need to navigate life. We introduce youth to Hip Hop culture to support them in building confidence, healthy relationships, resilience, creative expression, and community. As of 2023, Unity is active year-round in Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Manitoba and has a 16 year history of serving 500,000+ youth (ages 13-29) facing barriers to mental health, inclusion, employment and skills development!
