Mission Statement

Wild at Heart is a charitable non-profit, volunteer-based organization that promotes wildlife conservation by providing veterinary care and rehabilitation to injured, sick, or orphaned wildlife in Northern Ontario with the goal of releasing rehabilitated animals back into the wild. In addition, we have a strong focus on community education, volunteers, student interns, and media events to increase the understanding of wildlife issues.

About This Cause

Wild at Heart Wildlife Refuge Centre is the only facility of its kind in Northern Ontario. Over 900 animals are treated annually, and the number of animals in need of help are continually increasing. These include songbirds, raptors, small and large mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Wild at Heart has been a work in progress for over thirty years. Twenty years ago, we were able to take in 50 – 100 wild animals per year and now we are able to effectively care for over 900. We now have an ideal three acre property with an 8,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility to house acutely ill, injured or orphaned wildlife. We also have an educational center in order to have educational and eco-tourism programs. There are over 10 outbuildings which have been built, primarily by volunteers, to enable treatment programs for small mammals, as well as avian species. We have recently built a moose enclosure with professional chain link fence, a loafing pen and running water in a small creek. We are also dedicated to providing quality educational experiences for people of all ages in our community with regard to living peacefully with wildlife.
