Mission Statement
Apathy is Boring is a non-partisan, charitable organization that supports and educates youth to be active and contributing citizens in Canada’s democracy. Our vision is a Canada where every young Canadian is an active and creative citizen, and youth are meaningfully engaged in all aspects of the democratic process. This is more than just voting. It is about supporting young people to take charge of the conditions that they live in. Apathy is Boring accomplishes its mission through three core programs: Our RISE program, an initiative of Canada Service Corps, empowers and engages young people all year round. It provides an opportunity for young people to get involved and take action on issues facing communities on a local level. Our VOTE program is about making it easy for young people to navigate elections on all levels of government. We provide resources and break down information to make it easier for young people to get to the polls. The Reach Program reaches out to the public through online channels and creative methods to increase awareness about civic and democratic engagement. It’s our first step of intervention, building the network which then feeds into further programs. Our YOUTH FRIENDLY program targets organizations and municipalities who want to better engage young people. We provide a range of services and resources to help get the youth voice heard.
About This Cause
Apathy is Boring is the only youth-led, non-partisan Canadian charitable organization that offers programming aimed at unengaged youth 18 - 35 years old, mobilizing them to become active citizens, while at the same time working with civil society and government to engage youth in decision-making. Since 2004 Apathy is Boring has distinguished itself as a credible leader by reaching millions of young Canadians and working with partners as diverse as Elections Canada, Office of the Secretary to the Governor General, MTV/MuchMusic, Dose.ca, and many more to engage youth across Canada. Apathy is Boring was founded in 2004, when a choreographer, a filmmaker, and a fashion photographer met at a party. Troubled by how few of their friends were actively participating in Canada's democracy, they started an online campaign to mobilize youth to vote during the 2004 federal election. Today, we work year round to support and educate youth to become active and contributing citizens in Canada's democracy. Our vision is a Canada where every young Canadian is an active citizen, and youth are meaningfully engaged in all aspects of the democratic process. This is more than just voting. It is about setting up youth to take charge of the conditions they live in. As a non-partisan organization, Apathy is Boring doesn't support or oppose any given party, candidate, political campaign, or policy. When we discuss political topics, we stick to the facts. We approach all our work with a strong commitment to the values embedded in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. We recognize the complex social, economic, and political forces that bear on the lives of youth, particularly young people who struggle with the impacts of homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism, ableism and poverty. We recognize the legacy of settler-colonialism here in Canada and the impact it continues to have on Indigenous people on this land. Given the structural inequalities that permeate Canadian society, Apathy is Boring works to support young people to take charge of the conditions they live in by becoming active and engaged in their communities. Apathy is Boring does not consider issues of human rights to be partisan. Canada’s history and current socio-political system has excluded certain voices from being heard, and that is why we believe that having more inclusive participation in our democracy is one way to have a more equitable society.
