Mission Statement
To conserve endangered sea turtles in Canadian waters and worldwide.
About This Cause
The Canadian Sea Turtle Network (CSTN) has worked to conserve endangered sea turtles in Canadian waters and beyond since 1997. It is a collaborative organization built on combining the talents of scientists, commercial fishers, coastal community members, marine educators and members of the general public to address the complex challenges to sea turtle survival. The greatest threat to sea turtles in Canadian waters is entanglement and death in commercial fishing gear. For this reason, the CSTN’s long and successful partnership with commercial fishers is particularly noteworthy. This relationship has contributed both practical, industry-driven measures to conserve sea turtles and scientific data that has had a global impact on our understanding of sea turtle biology. The CSTN’s conservation and educational outreach programs are internationally respected and have received media attention ranging from community papers to major news outlets, such as The Nature of Things, The New York Times, and National Geographic Magazine. The CSTN is a past winner of the Gold Canadian Environment Award for Conservation.
