Mission Statement

AlgomaTrad’s mission is to cultivate joyful, multi-generational community and connection through the sharing, learning, and celebration of traditional music, dance, art, and heritage craft in the rural central Algoma region.

About This Cause

AlgomaTrad, incorporated in 2004 as a not-for-profit traditional arts organization and registered as a charity in January 2020, operates in the rural Central Algoma region. From 2005-2021, AlgomaTrad hosted over 400 concerts, dances, workshops, festivals, and camps for over 30,000 participants, partnering with local schools, municipalities, First Nations communities, and arts organizations to build diverse and accessible programs, including virtual programs during COVID. The annual AlgomaTrad music, dance and heritage arts Family Camp was established in 2004 and continues to this day. The needs-based Nicholas Missere Bursary Fund helps make the organization's events and learning programs accessible to individuals and families. AlgomaTrad passionately supports musicians, artists, and craftspeople in their work as performers, practitioners, and mentors, and loves to make delicious food a connective and celebratory part of events. In 2016 the organization acquired a 50-acre site on St. Joseph Island to develop a year-round centre for traditional arts and culture. The organization has raised $400k for this project which has leveraged another $3.6M of funding from NOHFC, FedNor, and Canadian Heritage to upgrade existing structures for 4-season use and build a timber frame year-round performance/hall that will include 4 program studio spaces as well. Through 2018-2019 a 30x60 timber frame pavilion was constructed with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, donations, volunteer, and in-kind support. In 2020 a permaculture design was implemented with an initial environmental revitalization project, including planting of over 8.000 native trees and shrubs. From 2022-23, over $1M was use to upgrade the kitchen, washrooms, second floor dorms, and health and safety of the existing Main Hall. The new Dan's Hall construction is slated for 2025, starting with a community-build of the timber frame structure in conjunction with the Timber Framer's Guild of North America. The AlgomaTrad Centre, rooted in humility, cultivation of well being, and reverence for nature, will permit the organization to carry its vision and mission forward. .
