About This Cause

The ProArts Society is a small organization, but we do one thing amazingly well: we present an easily accessible Wednesday lunch-hour concert series, free of charge, to the Calgary community. In a unique and wonderful way, these weekly concerts impact our society. These concerts are always – with no exceptions – presented free of charge. Everyone – including those with little (or no) income – has the opportunity to experience the wonders of artistic presentation. Immigrants learning about Canadian culture, groups from seniors residences, those with disabilities, and people living on the street – along with professionals working in Calgary’s vibrant downtown core and tourists visiting our city – are all welcomed to sit side-by-side and enjoy 45 minutes of outstanding artistic presentation in the historic downtown Anglican Cathedral. Established in 2002, the ProArts Society has remained true to its vision: to enhance and enrich the Calgary community by actively encouraging and facilitating free weekly arts presentations at the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer. Patrons are welcomed with a hearty smile and the offer of a free coffee. They are able to eat their lunches during the concert, and the atmosphere is casual but expectant. Visitors have told volunteers that it is a wonderful opportunity to experience the arts in a stress-free, welcoming environment. Talented artists and groups, both professional and novice, seek out and ask to be a part of the ProArts schedule. Many performers are local, and they welcome the opportunity to invite friends and family to their concerts. Many are emerging artists who study at the University of Calgary or Mount Royal University, or with local teachers and mentors, and the ProArts concert may be their first foray into public performance. There appears to be a genuinely friendly and supportive relationship between the artists and the ProArts Society staff and volunteers. Performers leave the concerts feeling that their art is appreciated. The fact that the concerts are free does not – in any way – affect the professionalism of the performance. Performances are of the highest artistic integrity and offer variety, diversity, and an opportunity to expand our thinking and perceptions. There are also exciting collaborations with other Calgary arts organizations that help to promote and build the arts within our community. These collaborations support and nurture the local arts community, building partnerships and encouraging artistic expression. The ProArts Society has the unique ability to work with artists to offer a performance opportunity that may not otherwise exist, with an audience receptive to their presentation. Many concerts include an opportunity to ask questions of the performer, and there is always the opportunity to interact with artists after the performance. Audience members leave the concerts feeling uplifted and inspired. The concerts provide them with a break from their working day – or a social event to look forward to – or a chance to interact with others – or an opportunity to introduce their children to the arts. It is an uplifting experience.
