Mission Statement

Looking Glass Foundation’s programs and services decrease isolation, instill hope, and sustain recovery for individuals who are impacted by eating disorders.

About This Cause

At Looking Glass Foundation, we provide safe and impactful programs and support to those who are working so hard on their road to recovery from an eating disorder. We know how difficult it can be to ask for help, and we witness, daily, the difference a helping hand can make. Our three community-based peer support programs are made possible thanks to trained and supported volunteers, who are overseen by our professional staff. Our 11-member Board of Directors are among these volunteers, and all of them support Looking Glass in many ways. Our programs and services include: • Hand in Hand (ages 16+): Volunteer mentors provide weekly, in person support to individuals of all genders who are struggling with disordered eating or any type of eating disorder. DUE TO COVID-19: All matches are temporarily meeting virtually. • Personal Recovery Space (ages 14+): Volunteer mentors provide a private digital forum accessible 24/7, offering empathetic, flexible, and confidential support to individuals who are struggling with disordered eating or any type of eating disorder. • Online Peer Support (ages 14+): Six times per week, volunteer moderators facilitate online group support chats in real-time that are safe, confidential, and encouraging for participants at any stage of their recovery. • Scholarship Program: Our scholarship program recognizes the resilience and achievements of B.C. undergraduate students who have experienced – or are experiencing – an eating disorder. • Looking Glass Residence Capital and Operating Expenditures (supporting youth aged 16 – 24): In this 14-bed home, youth of all genders receive 24/7 care and support, provided by a multi-disciplinary team of medical and mental health professionals who offer an intensive 12-week program of structured therapy in a caring, home-like setting. This is a unique collaboration between the Looking Glass Foundation and the Provincial Health Services Authority – the clinical operations are funded by PHSA; LGF is responsible for maintenance and capital improvements. • Looking Glass Residence Program Enhancements (aged 16 – 24): These guided recreational, arts and leisure activities help the youth at the residence care hone the life skills and confidence that will support their ongoing recovery. • Community Outreach and Support (all ages): LGF staff and Board respond via phone, email, and in person to individuals seeking resources and guidance on navigating eating disorders. Upon request, we offer presentations on prevention and intervention. Our programs and services are developed by a team that has lived experience with eating disorders, personally or through a loved one. These vital programs are offered at no cost to participants and are available as frequently and for as long as needed. Eating Disorders are serious, complex, life-threatening mental illnesses • An estimated 3 million Canadians suffer from an eating disorder. While some who struggle are able to access help, most are undiagnosed and/or unable to access treatment due to a variety of barriers, including the unnecessary shame and stigma associated with this illness. Eating disorders affect people of all ages, races, ethnicities, orientations, socio-economic status, and abilities. It can take years to recover from an eating disorder. Early identification and support is related to positive outcomes. • Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness (including chronic depression). Research indicates that 5-10% of anorexics die within 10 years of contracting the disease and 18-20% of anorexics will be dead after 20 years. However, with treatment the mortality rate falls to 2-3%. • Eating disorders are the third most common chronic illness among adolescents. Left untreated, these illness become entrenched and very difficult and costly to treat. “Our donors keep the program alive – and by keeping the programs alive, you keep hope alive.” Program Participant “You were there when I needed help the most. I felt more hope than I had in years.” Program Participant At Looking Glass Foundation, we understand, we listen, we support. We accept your progress and setbacks for what they are - - steps in your recovery journey. We know that Recovery is Possible - - we see it every day.
