Mission Statement

1. To provide a safe haven for animals in distress through rescue, foster care and/or adoption. 2. To ensure that, after in-take, all animals are spayed or neutered when appropriate. 3. To raise awareness and educate the public about responsible pet guardianship.

About This Cause

In 1977, several animal rescue volunteers began the work of helping provide veterinary care and re-homing for unwanted companion animals (cats & dogs). Our work focuses on three main areas: 1. adoption 2. education 3. spay/neuter When a pet comes into our care, we have a veterinarian assess its health, vaccinate the animal and spay/neuter it at the appropriate age. From there we place the companion animal in a short term foster home until we can find a new guardian for them. We also arrange adoptions for guardians who can no longer keep their pets due to illness, family breakdown, severe allergies, job loss, change in housing... In addition, Animalert's volunteers have developed a pet food bank that provides food & litter for disadvantaged people and their animals. Also, in recent years, in coordination with various local social service agencies, Animalert has facilitated short term housing for the companion animals of people fleeing an abusive family situation. This program expanded to include people who have mental health issues requiring hospitalization or homeless people who have companion animals. In furtherance of this initiative, in 2020, Animalert joined the Safepet Program. Safepet is run by the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association in partnership with The Farley Foundation and other community service organizations - local Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services & the area Humane Society. With a referral from a local service agency (Anova, LAWC, Victim Services of Middlesex-London) Safepet may be available to provide short-term housing for pets enabling the person to leave and move to short-term treatment or accommodation. We have recently introduced our new PETS ARE PEOPLE TOO Program. In the event an animal guardian has a pressing need for urgent vet care for their four-legged family member but they do not have sufficient funds to pay for that care, Animalert may step in to ensure vet care is given in a timely fashion thus allowing the family to avoid an "economic euthanasia". If their resources allow, the animal guardian may reimburse Animalert over time. Everyone wins. Selected Veterinarians who deal with low income clients will initiate the referral to Animalert. Subsequent to this referral, our Board makes a decision about whether we can step in based on the need/circumstances and the resources of our group. We promote the animals awaiting new homes on our website (www.animalert.ca), in social & print media and in person at local adoption events. Once an approved candidate has been selected, we make several follow-up calls after the adoption and we stipulate that, if the placement is not working well for the animal or the adopter, the animal is returned to our foster home. Animalert does not have a shelter site. Our companion animals are living with foster families so, because of this, we generally have more complete medical and behavioral histories. Housing for them is much better than being warehoused in cages in a shelter. Animalert is 100% volunteer - we have no salaried employees. Our funding comes from donations (Registered Charity #86912 5294 RR0001), adoption fees and fund-raising events. Historically, because we strive to minimize overhead expenses and we are all volunteers, about 85¢-90¢ out of every donated dollar goes directly to our program. Often the most significant expenses we incur are for veterinary care. Our service area centers around London, Ontario with occasional outreach to more distant parts of the Province.
