Mission Statement
EMBERS is an organization with a mission of creating economic and employment opportunities for those with barriers to employment. Over the past 18 years, EMBERS has helped thousands of people find work, and lead productive, fulfilling lives.
About This Cause
The largest program at EMBERS is EMBERS Staffing, an award winning social enterprise operating as a staffing agency. This program provides individuals with temporary and transitional jobs, acting as a bridge to full-time employment. Upon starting at EMBERS, workers are not only provided with a job, but with all of the necessary tools needed to succeed. Each morning, we provide breakfast, equipment rentals, as well as transportation to job sites and more, all completely free of charge. Whether people are newly arrived in the country, graduates of addiction recovery programs, or face other barriers to employment, EMBERS Staffing is there to provide opportunities and support through work.EMBERS is also home to other programs such as EMBERS Training, and EMBERS Eastside Works. EMBERS Training provides free individualized vocational and non-vocational training for eligible EMBERS Workers. With this service, EMBERS is not only financially helping a worker with a job, but helping them build a future through new skills and certifications. EMBERS Eastside Works is an income generation hub located in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, helping the most barriered people rediscover hope and self-sufficiency through social innovation programs that offer employment services and support. An example of the important work being done by EMBERS Eastside Works, is the Chinatown Community Stewardship Program, an initiative co-founded by EMBERS Eastside Works, Chinatown Business Improvement Association and the City of Vancouver. Started in July of 2019, this program was intended to create a more safe, harmonious and inclusive community in and around Chinatown. Social return on Investment In 2019 alone, EMBERS Staffing placed more than 2,000 workers on job sites and paid out over $9.2 million in wages and benefits. For every $1 paid to workers in our community, the estimated social return on investment (SROI) is $4.13 because people: • Move into better working and living environments, decreasing crime and violence rate. • Are less reliant on social assistance including income assistance, food banks, shelter allowances and health care. • Become financially stable, and experience increased confidence, happiness and improved social ties. • Spend more money in the community Using this formula means that EMBERS’ investment of $9.2 million in worker wages and benefits multiplies into $38 million in social benefits.
