Mission Statement

Dress for Success Vancouver is a community helping unemployed and underemployed women achieve economic independence and personal success. Our vision is a world where every woman thrives in work and life, recognizing that women’s economic empowerment is fundamental to strong economies.

About This Cause

We opened our doors 25 years ago with a mission to empower women into the workforce by providing professional attire to make a great first impression. Today, we know that to truly empower women economically and support them as they harness their highest potential, we need to invest in a continuum of pre-employment and job-retention training, mentorship, and access to professional networks and communities of support. That is why we provide a full schedule of free programs which include pre-employment services, wrap-around support, job-retention advice, and community connection opportunities with in-person and virtual offerings. We have served over 44,000 women in the Lower Mainland in 25 years. Based on the median income for women from the 2016 City of Vancouver Census data, that is a potential economic engine of almost $1.9 billion dollars. Our three core program areas are Career Programs (Workshops, Government Service Navigation, and One-on-one appointments that include mock-interviews, creating/updating linkedin and CVs, job-search guidance, and career/education option exploration), Leadership Programs (Professional Women’s Group: 12 month cohort learning job-retention program, workshops, and group and peer-mentorship), and Dressing Services (new and like new attire for interviews, new employment, new to Canada, and non-employment purposes such as co-ops, court appearances, internships). When our clients come to us, they are often experiencing at least one of the following: unemployed, under-employed in part-time or full-time roles, lack of advancement opportunities within their current employment, and/or difficulty applying for and securing new employment. Our client demographics include women and non-binary individuals who: earn below a living wage for Metro Vancouver, are looking to return to work after being out of the workforce, are sole income earners or single parents, are new to Canada, and/or identify as persons of colour. With each program and service provided, we aim to understand and address the many ways people are affected by barriers and discrimination that go beyond gender.
