Mission Statement
Codesigning Calgary's path to a sustainable future. Sustainable Calgary works with communities to imagine changes in how we live, work and play - changes that improve health, fight climate change, foster social and economic justice, and strengthen democratic institutions. We do this through research, education, advocacy and action : REAacT.
About This Cause
We evaluate Calgary's road to sustainability - and help you build healthier communities! Our "State of the City" reports tell us where improvement is needed in Calgary, and help us decide which projects to pursue. This has led us to specialize in the design of healthy communities. The great news? Healthy cities are a win-win… win-win-win. They're beautiful, they make us happier, they're great for the planet; they're great for business AND our personal pocket-books. Our approach: we collaborate with fellow Calgarians, envisioning neighbourhoods that are healthier, more convenient, more equitable - and a whole lot of fun! We identify community priorities, dive into research, team up with incredible designers, prototype real life changes, and collect metrics of success. Then we amplify our impact by sharing key insights with decision-makers. Keep an eye out for a new publication on some of our past work - coming soon! Your donations support our unique approach and the crucial behind-the-scenes work that sustains it. Our philosophy: Change happens when people come to see how social well-being, ecological well-being and our economy are intimately connected. We need to craft an economy that fits the planet we live on. Change happens when people come to see that the way we build our homes, neighbourhoods, and city can improve personal and public health or harm it. Change happens when our democratic systems of governance function efficiently and fairly. Citizens need to be encouraged and enabled to participate in our democracy. Change happens when citizens feel empowered to do so.
