Mission Statement
To enhance social inclusion for marginalized children ages three through ten.
About This Cause
Founded in 2002, Friend 2 Friend Social Learning Society is a non-government funded, federally registered charity. The Society creates and delivers programs and services that focus on addressing the social inclusion, peer play, and friendship needs of marginalized children within their peer groups. The Society and its programs were created by our founder and executive director Heather McCracken who is a parent of three children (one autistic child, one transgender child). Heather created our signature Autism Demystification® model and programs over twenty years ago after seeing the community needs for social inclusion programs for her own children. All the Society’s programs work to promote social inclusion for marginalized children who may otherwise be isolated, rejected, or even bullied within their peer groups. Unlike other programs, our Autism Demystification® programs focus on promoting understanding, acceptance, and empathy within the peer group by teaching tangible skills to peers. Our tangible Seven Friendship Tips are prosocial communications strategies taught to peers. The peer use these new communication strategies to interact successfully with their diverse peers. Research suggestions teaching prosocial communications strategies to children has a significant impact on social inclusion and the reduction of bully in schools. Using identity first language our programs are delivered inclusive settings where everyone is welcome to patriciate in their own unique way, thus creating a culture of inclusion within our schools and communities. The Society has delivered our Autism Demystification programs throughout BC, Canada and abroad for more than twenty years. We have written and publish many peer review articles, educational books, and children’s books. In 2012 the Society created our Play Groups program delivered in school throughout the lower mainland of BC before creating two play centres (Vancouver and New Westminster) where we delivered our inclusive Play Groups programs for more than ten years. The Society had delivered hundreds of professional training seminars, lectured at many post-secondary institutes in Canada and the US, well as coauthored award-winning research and publications such “Learners on the Autism Spectrum”.
