Mission Statement

There are 253 million people in the world who are visually impaired. Of those 253 million, 80% of the cases can be avoided or cured.

About This Cause

Orbis transforms lives by working to eliminate avoidable blindness across the world. When someone can see again, they gain independence and have the opportunity to go to work or school. Individuals’ lives are transformed, family burdens are lightened, and communities are strengthened. This ripple effect is one of the most important outcomes of our work. Many vision restoring interventions are very fast to implement, but last a lifetime. Additionally, they can be a highly cost-effective way to break the cycle of poverty. Orbis has been a pioneer in the prevention and treatment of blindness for over 35 years, and have worked in 92 countries. We work in collaboration with local partners including hospitals, universities, government agencies and ministries of health to provide hands-on ophthalmology training, strengthen healthcare infrastructure and advocate for supportive policies. We manage a team of over 400 world-leading medical volunteers (our Volunteer Faculty), representing 30 countries, who provide expert training to our local partners .
