About This Cause
Founded in Calgary in 2001, CAPD works exclusively in Colombia in three areas described below. As per our name, we work in a participatory manner and establish long term relationships with small entities registered in Colombia who are aligned with our goals and are serving a defined group of beneficiaries. Through capacity building and financing, we assist these Colombian entities to carry out their mission that aligns with our mission. CAPD is a volunteer organization directed by a Calgary Board with a significant Canadian-Colombian mix. SAFE WATER Using the BioSand Filter technology developed at the University of Calgary in the early 1990's and now promoted by CAWST (Centre for Affordable Water & Sanitation technology), CAPD has served more has 3000 families with hygiene training and BioSand Filter systems through its partners. This technology offers a long useful life, local manufacture and simplicity of use and maintenance. The Safe Water Program is effective because the projects deal directly with beneficiaries, ensuring good knowledge uptake and appropriate use of funds. GREEN LIGHT EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE This program helps more than 600 children from low income families to stay in school by providing uniforms, shoes and school supplies. Students must maintain a 75% average to stay in the program and parents must participate in activities that improve the school. This program is active in three Colombian states. INTEGRATION This program supports disability organizations that provide opportunities for low-income people with disability through therapy, recreational activities such as painting and dance, special education activities, nutritional snacks, and home visits. This program also provides custom constructed strollers for children with disability living in rural areas.
