Mission Statement
Learning Through Loss (LTL) designs and delivers grief education and loss support programs to youth, and training for parents, educators and youth-serving community organizations to increase youth well-being through grief, loss and bereavement.
About This Cause
Grief & loss programs built on the strength of youth peer support. Grief is universal and support should be too. Everyone experiences loss, but for youth, it can particularly difficult and harmfully impactful into adulthood. Friends of Living and Learning Through Loss (Learning Through Loss) provides safe spaces for grieving youth. We envision a community where all youth, and those that support them, have access to education, support, and resources relating to grief, loss and healthy strategies for healing. Loss can include any life-changing event, such as: * The death of a parent, sibling, family member or friend * Divorce or break up of a relationship * Loss of mental or physical health due to illness or injury * Loss of cultural identity and familiarity for newcomers and international students * Any other significant event that disrupts a youth's usual life routine. We design workshops and programs to support youth and young adults, arming them with tools and coping skills they can use to manage their loss and grief in healthy ways. The success of our work is based on a model of peer support, compassion, connection, understanding, and learning. We've become the community expert at helping youth through grief and loss and bereavement while also educating parents, teachers and youth-serving agencies about the impact of grief on youth and how to better help them through it. Our impact to individuals, families, and community are immeasurable. With the caring support of our Board, Team, Funders and Contributors like you, since 2010 Friends of Living and Learning Through Loss has delivered: * 1172 Good Grief and Supporting Youth Through Loss & Grief Workshops to more than 28,000 Youth, Educators and Community Members * 62 Peer Support Loss & Grief Group Programs to more than 425 grieving youth * No-Charge Individual Short Term Counselling Support to more than 100 youth struggling with the impacts with loss and grief. Learning Through Loss individual and group counselling programs are delivered by Registered Clinical Counsellors. Our Grief Workshops are trauma-informed, evidence-based and built on a foundation of experiential learning, group peer support and play to help promote healthy healing and resiliency. Our Values * Hope: Giving hope to youth, their families, and community members who are navigating grief and loss. * Education: Providing professional resources to youth, their families, schools and community members to live, learn, and cope with loss. * Community: Working collaboratively with our community partners to support youth experiencing grief and loss. * Ethical: Serving all youth, their families, and community members with integrity, professionalism, accountability and excellence.
