About This Cause
The VNCS was formed in 1993 specifically to establish a sense of community for those of Japanese heritage and/or those interested in Japanese culture. Throughout the year the VNCS organizes social events for its members and events to promote Japanese and Japamese Canadian culture with our members and the greater public. These are often with a theme related to a Japanese holiday or special occasion such as Cherry Blossom festival (hanami) or New Years celebration (mochi tsuki kai). We start the new year with a Mochi Tsuki Kai which we hold jointly with the Japanese Language School and the Japanese Friendship Society, the new immigrant group. Every February we hold Nori Tori a seaweed gathering outing and later in the spring a Udon Luncheon. Our outreach activities to promote Japanese culture include an obon service and festival in which we pay tribute to our ancestors,Japan Fest a summer Japanese cultural festival and in the Fall we have our major event, Japanese Cultural Fair in which we showcase a variety of Japanese arts forms and cultural performances. The Fall Japanese Cultural Fair which we have held for the past 22 years is also the main fund raiser for our Society. We often work with other organizations to promote Japanese culture or help to bring in Japanese cultural performers from around the world. Additionally we have a Grant Program through which we provide funds to assist individuals or organizations with projects that will enhance understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture. In 2020 we established an scholarship through the University of Victoria Foundation that will provide a $1,000 scholarship for a individual perusing Japanese related studies. In recent years our advocacy activities have been increasing. We lobby governments for issues that are important to our Nikkei community or we speak out against injustices such as anti-Asian racism. The VNCS sponsors several groups. Sakura Fujinkai which is a ladies group that meet regularly for social interaction and to learn Japanese crafts, ikebana (flower arranging) classes, Uminari Taiko which is a Japanese drumming group and the Furusato Dancers, a dance group that performs bon odori.
