Mission Statement

The Winnipeg Youth Chorus' mission is to provide a safe and inclusive environment for young singers to develop their musical skills and self-esteem while engaging them in philanthropic outreach and collaborative performances that benefit their local community.

About This Cause

The Winnipeg Youth Chorus Inc. (WYC) strives to provide an opportunity for young singers (ages 8-22) to develop: choral skills, choreography skills, dramatic skills and performance skills while engaging them in philanthropic outreach and collaborative performances that benefit their community.

We provide an variety of performance opportunities for the singers; from performances within Winnipeg, to performances outside of Canada, recording, special small group performances and many other opportunities.

Most importantly, the WYC is here to provide a positive experience for singers in order to develop their self concept and self esteem. Friendships, family involvement, commitment and hard work are stressed at all times within a structure that is always caring but also demanding in terms of time, energy, drive and commitment.

Junior Chorus
The Junior Chorus is an auditioned choir consisting of singers aged 8-14 from Winnipeg and the surrounding area. Led by Jorrel Camuyong, the Junior Chorus is designed to support and develop younger singers in the community to prepare them to sing in more advanced choral ensembles as they get older.

Senior Chorus
Is an auditioned choir consisting of singers aged 12 to 22 from Winnipeg and the surrounding area. Led by husband & wife team Garth and Lisa Rempel, the senior chorus strives to provide a unique opportunity for young singers to experience eclectic music through a combination of choral excellence, culture and movement. Today, the choir is becoming known beyond our borders and continues to blossom and flourish.

Enharmony is a group of singers who are selected from the WYC based on their ability to bring their individuality and voices together and blend into one sound. Their name; which is a reference to two notes in music which have different names but sound the same defines this ensemble perfectly.

The WYC prides itself in being an interactive contributor to the artistic and cultural landscape in Winnipeg. Through our music we also strive to build bridges between groups in need and the community. Building on our history of artistry, involvement, and philanthropy, the WYC fulfills its mission by (1) presenting innovative programming of the highest quality; (2) encouraging and supporting charitable groups in our community, locally and nationally; (3) representing our community as a visible participant in the region's cultural and arts life.

The WYC focuses on a wide variety of music from all time periods and presenting styles that educate, challenge and enlighten both our audiences and our singing membership. Additionally, the choir continues to affirm, by example and through song, the worth and dignity of all people. Music that is positive and openly supports issues related to human equality are represented at all concerts.

The original Winnipeg Youth Chorus was established in 1989. They produced 7 full length musicals, worked with Fred Penner, were the Children's Chorus for the Osmond's Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and spent 10 years supporting the Children's Miracle Telethon on CBC. The chorus was in operation until 2005. The choir was resurrected in 2011 by Artistic Directors, Garth and Lisa Rempel. Under their expert direction the choir has grown from a single group to three ensembles with 90+ singers: Senior Chorus, Junior Chorus and Enharmony.

Since 2015, the WYC has been performing Holiday and Spring Concerts that feature all 3 ensembles singing separately and together. In 2012, the WYC partnered with local R&B Artist Flo on her Anti-Bullying song, Hateless. The WYC took part in Flo's Hateless CD and music video which eventually became a part of the Government of Manitoba's Anti-Bullying strategy. In 2014, the WYC participated in the world premiere presentation of Zane Zalis' Holocaust Oratorio, I Believe. This project was performed as part of the Distinguished Concerts International Series at Lincoln Center in New York City. Parts of Zalis' empowering and educational piece continue to be a part of the WYC's regular repertoire. Also in 2015, the WYC's Enharmony was invited to be the feature choir at the prestigious Murau International Music Festival in Austria. In 2017, the WYC toured the Gulf Coast with performances at Disney World, Universal Studios and the National WWII War Museum in New Orleans.

The WYC has used its voice to help many other local community and charitable events over the years: the Terry Fox Run, the Breast Cancer Gala, S.A.G.E - Music Educators, Rockin for Choices Concert, Salvation Army, DASCH Foundation, Manitoba Schizophrenia Society, Count Me In Concert, Manitoba Heroes, the Children's Advocate, Collaboration with the Asante Children's Choir from Uganda, Flag Day/Canada Day/International Human Rights Day - Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Ronald McDonald House, SMD Foundation, St Joseph's Nursing Home, Vista Park Personal Care Home, CMHR Grain of Wheat , Fundraiser w/the Qubes for Shoal Lake, PTSD Benefit Gala, Wounded Warriors Challenge, the Mood Disorders Foundation of Manitoba, Habitat for Humanity and many, many more.
