About This Cause

The Winnipeg Youth Chorus Inc. (WYC) strives to provide an opportunity for young singers (ages 7-25) to develop: choral skills, choralography skills, dramatic skills and performance skills while engaging them in philanthropic outreach and collaborative performances that benefit their community. We provide an variety of performance opportunities for the singers; from performances within Winnipeg, to performances outside of Canada, recording, special small group performances and many other opportunities. Most importantly, the WYC is here to provide a positive experience for singers in order to develop their self concept and self esteem. Friendships, family involvement, commitment and hard work are stressed at all times within a structure that is always caring but also demanding in terms of time, energy, drive and commitment. Chickadees The Chickadees are an auditioned ensemble consisting of singers aged 7-12 from Winnipeg and the surrounding area. Led by Mary-Lynn Berti, the Chickadees are designed to support and develop younger singers in the community to prepare them to sing in more advanced choral ensembles as they get older. Rhapsody Rhapsody Is an auditioned choir consisting of singers in grades 7-12 from Winnipeg and the surrounding area. Led by Jorrel Camuyong and Melanie Spulnick, the choir strives to provide a unique opportunity for young singers to experience eclectic music through a combination of choral excellence, culture and movement. Coda Coda is an auditioned choir consisting of singers aged 18-25 years. Under the guidance of Artistic Directors Garth and Lisa Rempel, these young people sing a wide range of dynamic and challenging music and perform in a wide variety of setting from corporate functions to senior’s residences to weddings. The WYC prides itself in being an interactive contributor to the artistic and cultural landscape in Winnipeg. Through our music we also strive to build bridges between groups in need and the community. Building on our history of artistry, involvement, and philanthropy, the WYC fulfills its mission by (1) presenting innovative programming of the highest quality; (2) encouraging and supporting charitable groups in our community, locally and nationally; (3) representing our community as a visible participant in the region's cultural and arts life. The WYC focuses on a wide variety of music from all time periods and presenting styles that educate, challenge and enlighten both our audiences and our singing membership. Additionally, the choir continues to affirm, by example and through song, the worth and dignity of all people. Music that is positive and openly supports issues related to human equality are represented at all concerts. History The original Winnipeg Youth Chorus was established in 1989.
