Mission Statement

Founded in 2001, Gilda’s Club Greater Toronto is named after comedienne Gilda Radner of Saturday Night Live who had her own personal journey with cancer. Gilda’s Club is a licensed affiliated member of the highly regarded Cancer Support Community and exists so that no one has to face cancer alone. Our mission is to ensure that all people living with cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community. Gilda's Club provides cancer support programs free of charge to adults living with cancer, and support to teens and children who are dealing with cancer related stress as a result of living with a parent/loved one who has cancer. We provide bereavement support to adults, teens and children who have lost a loved one to cancer. We are unique in that we provide cancer support not just to the person with cancer, but their other family members too.

About This Cause

Gilda's Club Greater Toronto exists to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community. Our cancer support programs are free of charge to adults living with cancer as well as their teens/children & other family members experiencing cancer related stress and we receive no government funding. At Gilda's Club, adults living with cancer access our cancer support programs with others to build social and emotional support as a supplement to their treatment of choice. There are also support groups for their other family members. We also provide bereavement support to those who have lost someone to cancer. Since the onset of COVID-19 we have have transitioned our support groups, lectures, workshops, and educations sessions to an online format and the demand for our programs has increased. Gilda’s Club is a non-profit, charitable organization where membership is free. Funding is solicited from private individuals, corporations, and foundations. How we've adapted our cancer support services during COVID-19: Though we have been forced to close our doors temporarily due to COVID-19, our members living with cancer need us now more than ever. So we continue to provide support for our member families with virtual support programming which started the first week of April 2020. Our Program team, licensed health professionals, have been speaking with our members by phone on a daily basis, and their growing fears and concerns are palpable. The feeling of isolation is at an all time high, especially for those who are living alone while "fighting" cancer. Surgeries have been postponed. Cancer patients cannot take someone with them to the hospital when they go to the hospital for treatment. Patients who are staying at the hospital cannot be visited by their loved ones. This pandemic has increased cancer related anxiety. Those impacted by cancer are truly grateful that we continue to support them through virtual platforms and by phone during this pandemic. Our Vision: Our vision is that all people affected by cancer, whether through their own personal experience or that of a family member or friend, have the opportunity to be part of a free, cancer support community. Our belief is that social and emotional support is as essential as medical care when cancer is present. As a cancer support community, we celebrate the full range of human expression from tears to laughter. We pursue excellence at all times, and all that we do is built on respect, inclusion, and compassion. October 2021 marks 20 years that the Gilda’s Club program has proven its effectiveness. By supporting us, you will be on the leading edge in solving a critical gap in care for people living with cancer. Please join in our quest and commitment to provide the best practices of social and emotional support to all people impacted by cancer. Quotes: "…Gilda’s Club is the missing link in the cancer care system."– Dr. Patrick J.Gullane, MB, FRCSC, FACS, FRACS (Hon), Otolaryngologist, University Health Network. “While the medical system made sure I lived, it was Gilda’s Club Greater Toronto who truly gave me my life back.” Colleen C. – young adult member By supporting Gilda's Club Greater Toronto, you are helping us ensure that no one has to face cancer alone. Thank you.
