Mission Statement
Our mission is to assess, treat, and rehabilitate injured, ill, or orphaned wild birds for the purpose of releasing them back into their natural habitat. We also provide the public with information on bird intervention, safe handling techniques, and avian injury prevention. Our education programs are directed to people of all ages regarding the natural history, conservation, and rehabilitation of wild birds, through off-site presentations.
About This Cause
The late Kathy Nihei founded The Wild Bird Care Centre in 1981, when she successfully rehabilitated, over-wintered and released an injured Ruby-throated Hummingbird named Pip. From this small act of kindness, a legacy reflecting proudly on our entire community was built. A single mother at the time, Kathy saw a need in her community for bird rehabilitation and took it upon herself to fill it, making her one of those rare people who mix an equal amount of compassion with determination and strength of will. She continued to rehabilitate wild birds in her home until a larger location was needed. The Wild Bird Care Centre is a Canadian registered charity, and the only rehabilitation centre exclusively dedicated to wild birds in the region. Governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, The Wild Bird Care Centre is funded primarily through public donations. The Centre is open 365 days a year, taking in thousands of birds each year, many of which are endangered or threatened. Each life saved and released is a small victory for its species and the environment. The Centre is licensed under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, and federal Migratory Bird Regulations. Our permits allow us to care for various bird species, including those protected under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997, and federal Migratory Bird Regulations. The Wild Bird Care Centre is also committed to educating the public about wild birds and the issues that face them through off-site interactive presentations and classroom events. We believe: Every living creature deserves our compassion and respect. Found everywhere on earth, birds play a key role in the balance of ecological systems, such as forests, marshlands, wetlands and grasslands. We depend on these ecosystems for our very own existence. Each and every individual bird's life saved can give rise to future generations of its species. The Wild Bird Care Centre is in the process of constructing its new permanent home, a purpose-built, state-of-the-art facility that will expand its capabilities. Construction is set to begin in July of 2024, with completion by February 2025.
