About This Cause
Organization for Bipolar Affective Disorders Society (OBAD) Supporting mental health recovery through peer connection and lived experience The Organization for Bipolar Affective Disorders Society (OBAD) is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to supporting adults living with bipolar disorder, depression, and related mood disorders. Founded in Calgary in 1989, OBAD is led by individuals with lived experience, creating a peer-based, non-clinical environment where people can share their stories, reduce isolation, and build tools for long-term wellness. As featured on CTV News, OBAD’s peer-led approach is making a real difference in people’s lives. One participant shared, “I’m the most mentally strong I’ve been in years... I want to show people that there is hope for actually getting better and getting stable and recovering.” This reflects OBAD’s mission: empowering individuals through connection and community. OBAD offers free, peer-led support groups (virtual and hybrid), a 24/7 moderated Discord space, and Wellness Checks for individuals in crisis. These services are open not only to those living with mood disorders but also to their families, caregivers, and supporters. Through partnerships with mental health agencies, libraries, and educational institutions, OBAD also leads public awareness campaigns and delivers mental health education to reduce stigma and build inclusive communities across Alberta. “Nowadays, it feels different. I truly do not feel alone anymore... through OBAD, I’ve made some of the best friends in my entire life.” – OBAD participant, CTV News Catch the CTV News spotlight on OBAD! Together, we can reduce pressure on emergency services and help people feel more supported, connected, and resilient. Reaching More People in More Places OBAD offers online support to adults across Alberta, with hybrid in-person programs available in Calgary and Edmonton. Whether you're in a rural, urban, or equity-seeking community—support is always within reach. Helping People Feel Better Together Participants share that they feel less alone, more emotionally balanced, and more prepared to face life’s challenges. It’s about building confidence, not just avoiding crises. Creating Pathways to Stability For people living with bipolar disorder, timely, peer-based support makes a powerful difference. OBAD’s approach is grounded in global best practices and has been shown to reduce hospitalization rates dramatically. By supporting OBAD, you’re helping to build a healthier, more compassionate future for mental health in Alberta.
