Mission Statement
Helping Give Calgary's Homeless and At-Risk Girls Their Future Back!
About This Cause
Safe Haven Foundation has been keeping homeless and at-risk girls safe, off the streets and in school for 24 years. Haven’s Way®, their innovative, long-term supportive housing program, has been home to almost 100 youth. Their newest initiative, Haven’s Harbour, will provide affordable housing with supports for additional youth, graduating from Haven’s Way and like-minded programs, who are pursuing post-secondary education while learning to live independently. Haven’s Way duplicates a healthy, loving, and supportive family environment for homeless and at-risk girls between the ages of 14 and 24, who do not have child welfare status. Haven’s Way provides so much more than the bare necessities of food and a safe home. By focusing on choice and building individual capacity, the girls receive a wide range of direct support services such as education, healthcare, and counseling in mental health, trauma, and addictions, financial and career planning, life skills and individual development. This strength-based approach continually results in successes such as housing stability, connection to the community and natural supports, school attendance and graduations, increased job stability and performance, an ability to set and meet personal goals, and a successful transition at program exit. Haven’s Harbour will give youth the chance to practice the life skills learned at Haven’s Way while being provided with the security of affordable housing. This safety net will help them complete their education, reach their goals, and create a future of stability to ensure they never experience homelessness again. An on-site Community Hub will have designated space for cultural activities, financial management lessons, community cooking nights, crafts, and learnings from guest speakers. This will create opportunities to build community, form relationships, and allow youth to advance their living and life skills. The addition of Haven’s Harbour will increase the number of youths served by 150% and, in turn, increases the positive impact for their communities of families and natural supports. This equates to 3,285 bed nights per year for youth who are safely housed with access to education. Funding for the Haven’s Harbour capital campaign (building purchase, renovations, and program development) is the current focus, but there also an ongoing need to secure funds for Haven’s Way so that program stays operational for the long-term and those youth are never at risk of losing their housing and supports. Calgary’s vulnerable youth need your support to build a positive future.
