About This Cause
Project Warmth Society of Alberta is a registered charitable association that has been formed to assist the homeless and the underprivileged. Blankets, gloves, sleeping bags, scarves, parkas, and items of warm clothing are being gathered for distribution to those in need. In partnership with the Calgary Fire Department, all Calgary fire stations (42 in total) accept clothing donations on a year-round basis. In addition, Project Warmth Society also coordinates the annual Jacket Racket campaign to keep kids warm during the winter. In collaboration with Calgary Coop stores the Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Emergency Medical Services and both public school boards, this campaign collects winter jackets every fall for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Throughout the year Project Warmth helps coordinate numerous coat drives from small office to large corporate events. Corporate and individual volunteers pick up and deliver donated items to various shelters, individuals and other charities for distribution among those in need Each year Project Warmth holds our “Christmas Carol” fundraising gala at Theatre Calgary, wherein 450 disadvantaged children from our Project Warmth program and their parents are bused to Theatre Calgary, treated to the Theatre Calgary presentation of “A Christmas Carol, a lavish buffet, receive gifts and presents, chocolate covered caramel apples, and so forth with many of the children and families never having seen live theater before. To see their faces and their awe is truly magical and marvelous. Many of the children write thank you letters afterward and some remark that the evening was the very best day of their lives. It truly doesn’t get any better than that. In the case of emergency, Project Warmth will step out of their Mission Statement to help those in dire need. In 2013 Project Warmth was instrumental in the Flood Assistance in Southern Alberta and Project proceedings in the distribution of sleeping bags, outerwear, preparing breakfasts, as well as helping all those in need with the provision of funds and goods as required. Further, Project Warmth provided clothing, outerwear, and other assistance to the residents of Fort McMurray in an attempt to help all those requiring assistance to try and resume their normal day-to-day activities. Project Warmth Society has received two awards, the Western Legacy Award in 2014 and the Heroes of the Flood Award in 2014. This year Project Warmth has begun liaising with other Charities (such as Operation Kickstart and Goodwill) enabling them to help even more people in need. In 2012 Project Warmth distributed over 70,000 items of clothing and in 2018 that number increased to over 150,000 items of clothing to individuals, shelters and community associations. The need in Calgary is dramatic and is increasing every year. Besides the homeless, many of those helped out were children: from immigrant families, from families where their main income earner has lost their job and other low-income families, who otherwise, simply could not afford to properly clothe their children, let alone themselves, for our very cold winters.
