Mission Statement

Our mission is to promote the conservation and the use of heritage and unique plant varieties. We are a living gene bank.

About This Cause

Seeds of Diversity has been a Canadian charitable organization for 38 years, dedicated to the conservation, documentation and use of public-domain non-hybrid plants of Canadian significance. Our members are gardeners, farmers, teachers, scientists, agricultural historians, researchers and seed vendors. Members receive our magazine Seeds of Diversity four times a year, plus our annual Seed Exchange Directory. Through our annual Seed Exchange, members are able to obtain samples of over 3400 varieties of seeds and plants offered by other members in exchange for return postage. We educate the public on the importance of seed saving and pollinators, through our websites, www.seeds.ca and www.pollinationcanada.ca, and our books such as "How to Save Seeds" and "How to Make a Pollinator Garden". Our various projects include the Bauta Seed Security Initiative http://www.seedsecurity.ca/en/ (in partnership with USC Canada); "Bee Friendly Gardening and Farming" certification, and educational seminars for farmers who are learning about seed saving through our Seed Growers Network. We support over 150 Seedy Saturday seed exchanges each year throughout Canada.
