About This Cause
The Smallwood Crescent Community Centre is a not-for-profit, charitable, organization that aims to support residents of low-income housing on the Burin Peninsula, as well as other community members, through programs devoted to education, employment, wellness, and community development. There are approximately 188 low-income homes directly within the catchment neighbourhoods, however the outreach efforts provide access to programs and services for low-income individuals in many surrounding towns & communities. The Centre is located in the rural town of Marystown, Newfoundland & Labrador. The Smallwood Crescent Community Centre opened in 1995 as a not-for-profit organization targeted toward providing social & recreation support to low-income families living in social housing. Since that time, the Community Centre has grown to support children, youth, families, & seniors with a multitude of services including education, low literacy, mental health, unemployment, food insecurity, & many socio-economic barriers. Current community challenges that are a priority for the Community Centre are school drop-outs, low education, mental health & addictions, job creation for community residents, and food insecurity for children & families. The Community Centre is a well-established & respected organization in its community. It is managed by an 11-member Board of Directors & currently employs 10 full time/part time staff. The Community Centre is a reliable partner, with a focus on accountability, sustainability, and growth with our funders and programs. The Centre has long standing relationships with funders such as the Provincial Government of NL, the Federal Government of Canada, the Community Sector Council of NL, the United Way Foundation, Canadian Tire JumpStart, as well as new partnerships with foundations such as The McCain Foundation, CIBC Foundation, & the River Philip Foundation. The Community Centre is involved in many different program areas of work that serves hundreds of people every week. The After School Program/Homework Haven has over 60 children registered. This program offers free homework assistance, arts & crafts, recreation, field trips, access to free school supplies, and free after school snacks. This program has led to students receiving academic awards in Elementary School in the areas of Math, Science, & Reading. The Community Take-Out Meal Program, titled ‘Heart to Home’, serves close to 400 meals per month to low-income families living in the social housing areas of Marystown & Burin. The Seniors Club serves 10-12 seniors per week with social & fun activities. The Employment Services team helps upwards of 40 clients per month with programs such as Transitions to Work, Linkages, & YESS, which all assist unemployed youth & adults return to the workforce or return to school. The Community Centre also partners with local groups to support adults, teens, & parents who are struggling with anxiety, depression, and various other mental health & addiction concerns. The clients in these programs face barriers such as low education, lack of work experience, mental health concerns, criminal backgrounds, etc… The Smallwood Crescent Community Centre is requesting funding from any donors that would like to support our cause. This funding can then be directed to our program priorities, on an as needed basis, or can be directed toward the funding priorities of the donor.
