Mission Statement

Scleroderma, or systemic sclerosis, is a relatively misunderstood chronic disease. It is charaterized by the overproduction of collagen (fibrosis) and obstruction of small blood vessels. This imbalance triggers excessive scarring, leading to a hardening of the skin and an alteration of internal organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys and the gastrointestinal system. In addition, it is an autoimmune disease: the immune system turns against the person's own body by producing destructive autoantibodies. Unfortunately to this day scleroderma is still incurable, and although several thousands of Quebecers are suffering from this disease. In Quebec, woman are five times more likely than men to be affected by scleroderma. The disease also strikes children, although onset of symptoms usually occurs in the early forties.
