About This Cause
DDM Toronto is a registered charity group based in Toronto which is dedicated to the teachings of Chan (the origin of Zen) Buddhism. The organization has been conducting various activities related to the practice and study of Buddhism for over 20 years, including meditation, Dharma courses, study groups, Dharma ceremonies, and a host of other activities related to Chan Buddhism. DDM Toronto is affiliated with Dharma Drum Mountain, which was established by founding monastic Chan Master Venerable Sheng Yen. While conducting regular sitting meditation sessions, study groups and chanting classes, DDM Toronto has also found ways to introduce the practice of meditation and buddhadharma to various populations and communities. Throughout the years, DDM Toronto has hosted Dharma talks by Chan teachers in various public locations in the GTA. Introductory meditation classes in both English and Mandarin have also been held to allow people to begin their own practice, as well as introduce them to key concepts in Chan lineage. Other activities such as hiking and drum classes have incorporated different interests with the practice of Chan, making the group diverse and multi-faceted. Starting in 2011, an affiliated student-run club, Chan Meditation Group (CMG), was established at University of Toronto as a way of branching out to both the University student population and surrounding community. Since 2011, the group has established regular weekly practice in the Multi-faith Centre at University of Toronto, in addition to workshops and inter-faith partnering with other student groups. In doing so, DDM Toronto hopes to continue Master Sheng Yen’s efforts to make Chan accessible to all people, from all paths of life. DDM Toronto is located in a commercial plaza in Scarborough, Toronto, a building with three levels. It is highly accessible by car and public transportation, as well as situated in a quiet but active business area. Today, DDM Toronto continues in its aims to deliver comprehensive Buddhist education and develop caring collaborations within the community. By introducing the compassion and wisdom found in buddhadharma, we hope to help ourselves to live to the fullest, help others to find happiness in life, and create a harmonious environment for the society.
