About This Cause

Mission The Eldercare Foundation is a registered charity that raises and manages funds dedicated to supporting the provision of an enhanced quality of life for elders. Our mission, in partnership with our donors, is to ensure that our community supports and embraces aging with respect and dignity. We accomplish this by raising funds for equipment, home-like enhancements, community program support, research and education. The Foundation directly supports over 700 residents of the Aberdeen, Glengarry, Priory, Heritage Woods and the Summit long-term care facilities and generally supports the care of elderly persons living on Vancouver Island. The Foundation also supports community programs for seniors such as the West Shore and Summit Adult Day Programs, the Mobile Adult Day Program, the Community Bathing Program, the Yakimovich Wellness Centre and the Piercy Respite Hotel. Our Foundation believes in the importance of supporting our aging population. We are working towards reaching further into our Vancouver Island community to support partnerships and collaboration with senior serving groups and organizations that promote and inspire positive aging. Our goal is to raise awareness about the many resources and activities available to seniors and their family caregivers that help improve quality of life. Our “Embrace Aging” initiative, launched in 2006 to connect seniors and their families with community resources, has been reported to reach people beyond Vancouver Island inspiring them to connect with the resources in their own communities. Funding The Foundation is not government funded. We are an independently registered charitable organization. We rely on donations from individuals, businesses, service clubs and special events. The Foundation raises money for equipment, therapy programs and home-like enhancements that the government health care budget does not accommodate. We also raise funds to support community programs, education and research as noted above. Accomplishments We were established in 1982 and since then, the Foundation has donated over $9 million to support care for the elderly. The Foundation has funded equipment such as electric beds and lifts, wheelchairs, specialty mattresses and exercise equipment. We have planted over a dozen therapeutic gardens and purchased wheelchair-accessible vans to take long-term care residents on community outings. We have provided home-like enhancements at the care facilities we support and program funding to benefit the elderly in our community. Through our education awards, we have funded continued education for our care giving staff and provided research grants to promote enhanced quality of life for the elderly.
